Nature Songs

Music can be an excellent way to introduce children to some aspects of nature, in a non-threatening environment, as well as a nice way to tie in experiences they have already had. These are some of my favorite kids’ songs about flora and fauna.

Baa, Baa, Black Sheep
(tune for: ABC, Twinkle, Twinkle)
Baa, baa, black sheep, have you any wool?
Yes, sir, yes, sir, three bags full.
One for the master, One for the dame,
One for the little boy that lives down the lane.

Cluck, cluck, red hen, have you any eggs?
Yes sir, yes sir, as many as your legs.
One for your breakfast, one for your lunch,
Come back tomorrow and I’ll have another bunch.

Moo, moo, brown cow, have you milk for me?
Yes, sir, yes sir, as tasty as can be.
Churn it into butter, make it into cheese,
Freeze it into ice cream or drink it if you please.

Buzz, buzz, busy bee, is your honey sweet?
Yes, sir, yes, sir, sweet enough to eat.
Honey on your muffin, honey on your cake,
Honey by the spoonful, as much as I can make.

Baby Mice
Where are the baby mice? Squeak, squeak, squeak.
I cannot see them peek, peek, peek.
Here they come, out of their hole,
One, two, three, four, five, that’s all.
Bear Went Over the Mountain
The bear went over the mountain,
The bear went over the mountain,
The bear went over the mountain,
To see what he could see.

But all that he could see,
But all that he could see,
Was the other side of the mountain.
The other side of the mountain,
The other side of the mountain,
Was all that he could see.

Five Green and Speckled Frogs
Five green and speckled frogs,
Sitting on a speckled log,
Eating some most delicious bugs,
One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Now there are four speckled frogs.

Five Little Ducks
Five little ducks went out to play,
Over the hills and far away,
Mama duck called, “quack, quack, quack.”
Four little ducks came swimming back.
Four little ducks…
Three little ducks…
Two little ducks…
One little duck…
All the little ducks were out to play,
Over the hills and far away,
Mama duck called, “quack, quack, quack.”
And all the little ducks came swimming back.

The Green Grass Grew All Around
Oh, in the woods, there was a tree,
The prettiest little tree that you ever did see.
And the tree was in the ground,
And the green grass grew all around, all around,
And the green grass grew all around.
And on this tree, there was a branch,
The prettiest little branch that you ever did see.
And the branch was in the tree and the tree was in the ground,
And the green grass grew all around, all around,
And the green grass grew all around.

And on this branch, there was a leaf…
And on this leaf, there was a bird…

Here is a Beehive
Here is a beehive, where are the bees?
Hiding inside, where nobody sees.
Soon they come creeping
Out of the hive,
One two three four five.

Home On The Range
Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam,
Where the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day.
Home, home on the range
Where the deer and the antelope play.
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

It’s Raining, It’s Pouring
It’s raining, it’s pouring,
The old man is snoring,
Bumped his head on the side of the bed
And he couldn’t get up in the morning.

Itsy Bitsy Spider
The itsy bitsy spider went up the water spout.
Down came the rain and washed the spider out.
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain,
And the itsy bitsy spider went up the spout again.

I’ve Got a Baby Bumblebee
I’ve got a baby bumblebee,
Won’t my mommy be so proud of me,
Oh, I’ve got a baby bumblebee.
OUCH! He stung me.

I’m squashing up my baby bumble bee,
Won’t my mommy be so proud of me,
Oh, I’m squashing up my baby bumblebee.
EEEEEWW.

I’m wiping off my baby bumble bee,
Won’t my mommy be so proud of me,
Oh, I’m wiping off my baby bumblebee.
There, all clean!

Little Green Frog
Mmm, ahh, went the little green frog one day,
Mmm, ahh, went the little green frog.
Mmm, ahh, went the little green frog one day,
And his eyes went mmm, ahh, too.

Little Miss Muffet
Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet,
Eating her curds and whey.
Along came a spider and sat down beside her,
And frightened Miss Muffett away.

Loch Lomond
By yon bonnie banks, and by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond,
Where me and my true love were ever wont to go,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

Oh, ye’ll take the high road, and I’ll take the low road.
And I’ll be in Scotland afore ye.
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

Twas then that we parted in yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side of Ben Lomond,
Where in purple hue the Highland hills we view,
And the moon coming out in the gloaming.

The wee birdies sang and the wild flowers sprang,
And in the sunshine the waters are sleeping,
But the broken heart it kens nae second spring again,
Though the waeful may ceases frae their greeting.

Mary Had a Little Lamb
Mary had a little lamb,
Little lamb, little lamb,
Mary had a little lamb,
Its fleece was white as snow.

Everywhere that Mary went,
Mary went, Mary went,
Everywhere that Mary went,
The lamb was sure to go.

It followed her to school one day,
School one day, school one day,
It followed her to school one day,
Which was against the rule.

It made the children laugh and play,
Laugh and play, laugh and play,
It made the children laugh and play,
To see a lamb at school.

Morning Has Come
Morning has come, night is away
Rise with the sun and welcome the day!
Morning has come, night is away
Rise with the sun and welcome the day!

My Dog Rags
I have a dog, his name is Rags;
He eats so much his tummy sags,
His ears flip flop, his tail wig wags,
And when he walks, he goes zig zag.

Flip flop, wig wag, zig zag;
Flip flop, wig wag, zig zag;
Flip flop, wig wag, zig zag.

My dog Rags he loves to play,
He rolls around in the mud all day,
When I whistle, he won’t obey,
He always runs the other way.

Old MacDonald
Old MacDonald had a farm, E – I – E – I – O.
And on his farm he had a cow, E – I – E – I – O.
With a moo, moo here and a moo, moo there,
Here a moo, there a moo, everywhere a moo, moo,
Old MacDonald had a farm, E – I – E – I – O.

(pig, duck, horse, donkey, chickens, dog, cat)

Pussycat
Pussycat, pussycat, where have you been?
I’ve been to London to visit the Queen.
Pussycat, pussycat, what did you there?
I frightened a little mouse under the chair.

Raindrops and Gumdrops
If all the raindrops were lemon drops and gumdrops,
Oh, what a rain that would be,
I’d stand outside with my mouth open wide,
Et – et – et –et –et – et – et –et – et – et
If all of the raindrops were lemon drops and gumdrops,
Oh, what a rain that would be.

If all of the snowflakes were candy bars and cupcakes,
Oh, what a snow that would be,
I’d stand outside with my mouth open wide,
Et – et – et –et –et – et – et –et – et – et
If all of the snowflakes were candy bars and cupcakes,
Oh, what a snow that would be.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat
Row, row, row your boat,
Gently down the stream,
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream.
There Was A Little Turtle
There was a little turtle,
He lived in a box,
He swam in a puddle,
He climbed on the rocks.
He snapped at a mosquito.
He snapped at a flea.
He snapped at a minnow.
And he snapped at me.
He caught the mosquito,
He caught the flea,
He caught the minnow,
But he didn’t catch me.

Two Little Blackbirds
Two little blackbirds, sitting on a hill,
One named Jack, The other named Jill.
Fly away, Jack, fly away, Jill.
Come back, Jack, come back, Jill.

You Are My Sunshine
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
You make me happy when skies are grey.
You’ll never know, dear, how much I love you,
Please don’t take my sunshine away.
